What are the 5 rules between a P-Trap and it's protecting vent?

Updated: Nov 5, 2020

7.5.6.3. describes the 5-fixture waste pipe requirements for ALL FIXTURES. 1 – Maximum Length – Table 7.5.6.3. 2 – Minimum Length – 2X Drain Size 3 – Minimum Fall – 1 in 50/1/4” per foot 4 – Maximum Fall – 1 x Drain Size 5 – Change of Direction - 135° Every fixture requires a vent and a trap.

These rules allow the plumbing system to operate as it's intended to. Not following these rules can cause trap seals to be lost and expose plumbers, inspectors and homeowners to dangerous gases from the sanitary drainage system into the building. Plumbing number 1 rule is to maintain these seals.

In order to ensure code compliant installations you must meet these requirements as outlined in this video from our Residential Drainage, Venting and Waterpipe continuing education online course.
